Michael Ewens Bayne Smyth, B.Sc. (Hons.), was selected as the 1960 South Australian Rhodes Scholar.
Smyth, who attended the school from 1949 to 1954, had demonstrated outstanding ability during his school years. In his final year, he had served as both Captain of the School and Head of the Boarding House, while earning a place on the General Honours List and receiving numerous awards, including the Keith Swann Memorial Medal for best all-round student. His achievements reflected both academic excellence and a remarkable breadth of involvement in sport, debating, and school leadership.
He went on to an equally distinguished academic career, obtaining First Class Honours in Zoology from the University of Adelaide. His leadership qualities were evident in his election as President of the Students’ Representative Council, alongside continued involvement in sport, debating, and college life.
Awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1960, Smyth proceeded to Exeter College, Oxford, where he undertook doctoral study and subsequently obtained his doctorate in Animal Ecology. He later lectured at the University of California before returning to the University of Adelaide as a Senior Lecturer in Zoology. He died in 1973.
