Born 1934 the son of Dr. Mervyn Wyke Evans, and one of a handful of boys who have been Captain of the Preparatory School, Captain of the School, and Dux, David Wyke Evans undertook studies at the University of Adelaide and, having won the 1957 Rhodes Scholarship, at Oxford.
Evans had an outstanding career in the Australian diplomatic service, including Ambassadorships to Turkey (1994 to 1998), the former USSR (1981 to 1984), Senegal (1974 to 1977) and the Ivory Coast (1975 to 1977), High Commissionerships to India (1990 to 1994), Malaysia (1984 to 1987), Ghana (1974 to 1977), and Deputy High Commissioner to the UK (1987 to 1990).
Evans was known as a gentleman, South Australian Rhodes Scholar and his life was one of extraordinary public service as an Australian diplomat from 1959-1998. David Wyke Evans passed away in 2024, aged 90.
